10 questions with…Jenny Viviano

GenNext Jenny Viviano1. Where do you work?
I work at Ladue News as an advertising manager. My main duties are coordinating internal logistics of the advertising department, creating marketing materials, and working with layout, photography and design. How I describe it to people is that the sales team goes out and greases the wheels, and I keep them turning. I’ve been there since college, so a little over three years.

2. How long have you lived in St. Louis?
I moved here in August 2005 after I graduated from Indiana University. I thought I’d try it out, and three and a half years later, here I am. It was my first job offer.

3. So where are you from originally, and why did you pick St. Louis?
I’m from Ohio and I like the Midwest. I was definitely looking for a big city. This job opportunity came up and sounded exciting. It was a chance to get some business experience while also indulging my creative side.

4. How and when did you get involved with GenNext?
For the past few years, I’ve donated to United Way through work and I’ve done a little bit of research on the organizations that benefit from United Way. I’ve also done the Life Skills run for a few years. That cause is close to my heart, because my sister is developmentally disabled. It was last winter that I was feeling that I could do more, help more, be more involved. I found GenNext online and signed up for a service project at Mary Ryder Home. I really enjoyed it and just kept coming back. What first drew me to GenNext was the service projects, being able to see different organizations around the city and invest a little bit of time to help them do their important work. Getting a Taste of Giving

By Christy Oldani

GenNext Taste of GivingWine, food, bread pudding, and all for a good cause to support the United Way! It was a tough job, but someone had to do it.

Fellow GenNexter Stephanie Herbers and I claimed Harvest as our restaurant to host for United Way’s first ever Taste of Giving night. The event started at 5:30 p.m. and Stephanie and I donned our oversized Live United shirts. We tied our shirts up in a knot to fit, like we did in the 80s, but we didn’t care how we looked, we just wanted folks to know we were supporting the United Way.

We planted ourselves at the bar and proudly spread out 2-1-1 and other United Way brochures on the hostess stand and bar. We greeted every guest on their way in, letting them know it was United Way night and 20 percent of their bill would be donated to the United Way to help the nearly 200 agencies in our community they serve.

Almost everyone coming into the restaurant was coming to support the United Way. We spoke to a man who was running the agency side of fundraising. We spoke to several who do other jobs with United Way agencies or work for the United Way. One young couple had heard about the Taste of Giving while watching the Blues game. They decided to change their “date night” to Tuesday instead of Thursday and come out to support the United Way. Click to learn more
