10 questions with…Erin Fann

Erin Fann1. Where do you work?

I’m a tax senior at AMD. I work with individuals and closely-held businesses in their tax planning and in trying to achieve their financial goals. I also do quite a bit of consulting for nonprofits. I kind of fell into it because my accounting teacher in high school was great.

2. How long have you lived in St. Louis?

About five years. I just always wanted to move to St. Louis. I grew up in a small town in southern Illinois, and we always came here to go to the zoo and the Muny. I knew I wanted to move to a bigger city. Chicago was too big, but St. Louis seemed like a good fit.

3. How and when did you get involved with GenNext?

I heard about it at a networking event in June 2006. I had been looking for somewhere I could volunteer. GenNext was a perfect fit.

4. What’s been your favorite GenNext activity or memory?

My favorite was a service project at Grace Hill. We just cleaned all of their playground equipment outside, but the volunteers that were there with us from the agency were just so touched. They couldn’t stop thanking us, telling us how much it would mean to the kids.

5. Why did you apply to join the steering committee?

It was something I had thought about as a way to get more involved with GenNext’s mission and everything we were trying to accomplish. It’s been great. I’ve gotten to know people better and see how United Way works on a different level.

6. Why is GenNext important to this region?

I think it’s important that young people are getting together and paying attention to the city, and showing that we do care and can make a difference.

7. Where would you like to see GenNext in five years?

I would like to see us continue to grow and increase our membership and the agencies we’re able to help.

8. What was your favorite thing about your hometown?

March Madness. Our high school basketball team was always pretty good, and we’d always get off school when our team was in the state playoffs. The whole town was always rallied around the team.

9. Cardinals, Rams or Blues?

Cardinals! They’ve been a favorite since Ozzie Smith was doing flips on the field.

10. What’s been your worst date experience?

You mean one I haven’t tried to suppress yet? There was one date where all the guy did was talk about his four-wheeler. I met him through a friend, and he was from a small town in Illinois, too.
